ENGLISH COURSES

7th Grade English Courses

 
English 7 A & B (English, full year)
English 7, a full-year course, engages students in reading, writing and speaking effectively in the English language. The course involves students in reading fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for comprehension and appreciation. It includes many varied writing activities: informal narrative, formal expository, technical, and creative writing. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.

Accelerated English 7 A & B (English, full year)
The course engages students in an enriched and accelerated experience in reading, writing, and speaking effectively in the English language. The course involves students in reading fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry for comprehension and appreciation. It includes many varied writing activities: narrative, expository, technical, and creative writing. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.
Students will be selected based on NWEA scores and subsequent teacher recommendation.



8th Grade English Courses

 
English 8 A & B (English, full year)
English 8, a full-year course, offers a wide and varied language arts experience. The course also emphasizes students communicating effectively in small groups of familiar people. In addition, many varied types of writing activities are examined. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension.

Accelerated English 8 A & B (English, full year)
Students in Accelerated English should be interested in examining a wide variety of material in a more in-depth fashion, using higher level thinking skills. The student should be self-motivated and willing to discuss openly in class. Some material is similar to that in a regular English class, but it will be covered at a different pace and, possibly, using a different style. Students will be presented with a variety of reading strategies designed to increase comprehension. (Admission to this class is by recommendation from previous English teacher and other established criteria.) Students will be selected based on NWEA scores and subsequent teacher recommendation.



9th Grade English Courses

 
English 9 A & B (English, full year)
Students will engage in a variety of reading and writing activities, many of their own choice, as well as selected literature and writing assignments. Students will develop the following skills:
a) analyze and interpret novel, drama, short story, nonfiction and poetry
b) research methods
c) formal speaking
d) grammar and vocabulary in the context of writing

Accelerated English 9 A & B (English, full year)
Students will continue to develop quality written and verbal communication skills as well as analyze and interpret many forms of literature. Students will study learning styles through multiple intelligence theory. Students will also be encouraged to nurture an openness to new ideas through discussion, literature, interpersonal experiences, and possible field trip experiences.
Students need to possess good written and verbal communication skills.
Students will be selected based on teacher recommendation.
