MUSIC COURSES
 

7th Grade Music Courses

 Band 7 (Music, full year)
Students will begin to develop the mechanics of good instrumental technique and experience the foundation of a cooperative band situation. Students will participate in two concerts and focus on sight reading and sectional work. Emphasis will be placed on basic rhythm, tone production, posture, and developing a good practice ethic. The fundamentals of music will be taught through listening, composing, and analyzing. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Band is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.


Choir 7 (Music, full year)
Students will be provided a basic introduction to singing. Emphasis is placed on proper use of the voice, breath support, sound production, and singing accurately on pitch in a cooperative choral situation. In addition, students will be given the tools necessary to read music and understand basic music theory and the elements of music. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class.

Choir is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Band/Choir 7 (Music, full year)
Students will have the opportunity to study both instrumental and vocal music. Students will be scheduled into a band which meets the same hour as choir and will rotate between the two classes. Students are responsible for the work and the performances of both groups. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Band / Choir is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Orchestra 7 (Music, full year)
This course is designed for those students who have played the violin, viola, cello, or bass for one year. The prerequisite is sixth grade orchestra or an audition with the director. Students will focus on improving previously-learned skills and learning new technical skills on their instruments, playing and performing in both large and small groups, and learning basic music theory and composition skills. Repertoire will include classical, modern, and popular music arranged for string orchestra and small ensembles. The course includes attending at least one field trip to hear a major professional orchestra or other performing group. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class.

General Music (Music, full year)
Students will experience music and expand their musicianship in a variety of ways. 7th grade general music provides a basic understanding of the reasons for having music as part of their lives. Since music influences our daily lives, music will serve as a tool to learn to play, compose, listen, and analyze. In addition, the interactive use of music within theater, television, and the motion picture industry is explored. The genres of pop, jazz, and classical music will be studied.


 

8th Grade Music Courses

 
Band 8 (Music, full year)
Students will continue to explore the area of instrumental performance. The course is designed to further develop the concepts taught in 7th grade band. Students will build on previously learned techniques. Students will gain confidence and improve musicianship on his/her instrument. Emphasis is placed on large ensemble development through advanced rhythms, scale studies, long tones, and sight reading. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are part of this class. Band is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Choir 8 (Music, full year)
Students will develop their singing voice. They will also continue to improve skills such as note reading and part singing. Emphasis will be placed on voice quality, tone, range, and intonation. In addition to voice training, choir rehearsals impart the skills of sight-reading, ear-training, melodic diction and rhythmic dictation. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Choir is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Orchestra 8 (Music, full year)
The emphasis of eighth grade orchestra will be to extend technical skills in order to study and perform a wide variety of classical, contemporary and multicultural string orchestra literature. Great emphasis will be put on building the orchestra as an ensemble. Students will continue technique development on their instruments through position study, shifting work and solo and ensemble literature. We will take at least one field trip to hear a major orchestra or other performing group during the year. Evening performances are a part of this course. Orchestra is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.


 

9th Grade Music Courses

Band 9 (Music, full year)
Students are encouraged to grow musically by expanding both their small and large ensemble repertoire. Performing skills are enhanced by further study of scale studies and chorales. Emphasis is placed on articulation, tone range, blend, balance and intonation. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Band is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Choir 9 (Music, full year)
Students will continue to develop their skills in sight singing, part singing, and ear training. Performances are an intregal part of the course, and must be attended. Regularly scheduled concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Choir is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.

Orchestra 9 (Music, full year)
Students in 9th grade orchestra will have opportunities to work as a full orchestra, a string orchestra and in small ensembles. The focus of 9th grade orchestra will include advancement of technical abilities in the areas of upper position work, tone quality and vibrato as well as development of the musical aspects of the whole ensemble. Students will have the opportunity to play with wind and percussion instruments (full orchestra) and to do more extensive work with small ensembles. Participation in concerts outside of the school day are a part of this class. Orchestra is a performance-based course that relies on participation for the entire year. As a result, dropping the class will not be allowed.
